Hard work and support from many generous people were needed to rehabilitate this historical building. We had to jack up and straighten the entire structure, tear off the old roof, and install a new one. Then the hard work really began.
We feel the renovation was a community project as much as a business enterprise. Many thanks to those who helped.

A before and almost after picture of the Marv's Place

What a crew!

Joel II working on the front sidewalk

Ben and Walt laying more of the sidewalk. The original, herringbone-pattern brick sidewalk was marred by more than a century of wear and tear, frost heaves, and paint splatters. All the bricks were removed, old concrete skirts broken up, a new curb laid, the ground graded for drainage, and a new base of bermstone and sand laid and tamped. Then the bricks were re-laid upside-down to expose their clean sides.

Ben and Walt found that relaying the bricks, many of them worn, misshapen, or broken, frustrated them at every turn. The bricks just didn't seem to want to lay back in the same old pattern. It definitely took the minds of geniuses (Ben and Walt) to get them finally down. Look for the brick along Mound Street stamped "WBF"--Wheeling Brick Factory, we guess.

The sidewalk is almost finished!!

Below are some various pictures of the renovation process:

The building as it looks now

This picture is of our apartment in the back of Marv's Place. I wanted to put this in to show the
changes to those that knew what it looked like before.
